    Could you please comment on the long term safety of mouth guards… I am concerned that wearing something over the teeth will promote decay and that the plastic material will break down with grinding and saliva and be toxic as solvents and plastics are absorbed…

    If you are referring to the night guards to prevent jaw/tmj/grinding problems, there are appliances that do leak toxins and are not biocompatible. It is always best to check the material prior to inserting/using them. If you have proper oral hygiene and diet, then decay will be averted. Using a mouthguard will cover the teeth and keep the natural cleansing properties of saliva at night. Just remember there’s a reason for the mouthguard and there are simple ways to prevent decay.
