——– Transcript Of Today’s Show ——–

Good Morning, this is Dr. Marvin. Thank you for listening to us again. Live show here, Saturday morning 8:30 every week for the last three or four years. I am Dr. Marvin Pantangco, licensed dentist here in California. Thank you for tuning in. For the next half hour you are in for a treat. I actually have a guest in today, so I’m not going to be rambling on for the next 30 minutes. I actually have a guest, and I’ll introduce you in just a second. If this is your first time listening, thank you for tuning in. This show is called Let’s Talk Dentistry, but we talk about a whole lot more.

I am a licensed dentist here in California with a clinic here that provides holistic or natural dentistry. One thing about holistic, natural dentistry that is very unique is that we look at the whole body or the whole person. We don’t only look at the teeth and gums and fix teeth like a mechanic looks at a car. We actually look at the whole being and the whole person. When we deal with the whole person, we have to not only look at the teeth and gums, but what we do in dentistry and the things we treat in the mouth do effect the whole body. One of the reasons why we do this is because your health is more important than almost anything. It’s more important than money.

If you are concerned about your health, we have a great show for you today, because I actually have a wonderful guest. Before I interview him today about his services, or how he helps our patients, or how he can help you, I always want to talk about a patient that came in this week who is a patient of mine that we actually did a video on a while back. It’s on youtube and I’ll put it on our facebook page when we’re done here today. It’s gotten a lot of views. It’s about a cavitation, or an infection in the jaw bone. The patient came in this week; I haven’t seen her in a while, but she came in this week and it just put a smile on my face. That’s why I want to share with you this story.

This person came in this last week, and I said, “Hey, how are you doing?” She said,

“I feel great.” I just love it when they have a great big smile on their face. She told me, “I tell everybody about you, because what you did changed my life.” So what happened is about a year ago I took out an infection in the jaw bone that no other dentist and no other doctors saw. She’d been to medical providers and they couldn’t give her any answers. Her issue was that for the last 30 years she has been tired. When you’re tired you try to fix it by going to sleep, but she would say, “I would sleep for 20 hours a day, and it would still not help the problem.”

Everyone was asking her, “Why are you tired? Why are you sick? Why don’t you go to bed or get sleep?” So she did that, but she never, ever got better. It was frustrating; she didn’t know what to do.

When we took out the infection she said, “Almost immediately, I had energy. I wasn’t tired anymore, I wasn’t fatigued or anything like that.” I said,

“That’s amazing!” Now she’s able to accomplish a lot more. She was like, “If someone would have told me this a long time ago, like when I had my wisdom teeth out or when this first started…” Just imagine how much more she would have accomplished. In those 30 years she was always tired and sleepy. Now she is a changed person. She has a lot more energy, is more positive in life, can get more things done, because we did something as simple as removing an infection in the mouth. Believe it or not, we can change people’s lives for the better, not only from the dental perspective, but also from the health and lifestyle perspective. If you don’t believe this, then don’t believe it. All I can tell you is that we are definitely changing lives. Things like this are what give me the passion, excitement and enthusiasm to continue helping these people.

If you want to know if you have infections in your mouth that could be causing all of your problems, all of your major health issues, then give us a call. Let me give you that number for our office, it’s 760-536-1199. That’s our office line. We do have appointments open. Dr. Godes and I help people to the enth degree. So if you like what I’m saying, if you’ve been going to doctors and they’ve been putting their hands up and saying, “Oh, it’s just because you’re getting old.” Or, “Did your parents have it? Oh, it’s just genetics.” I don’t accept that. If you want to figure out if there’s any root causes for your problems, and it could be coming from your mouth, and you’ve been going to a dentist that doesn’t identify these things, doesn’t know how to treat these things or doesn’t know about it, then you may not be getting the help that you are looking for. So give us a call; we also have a facebook page, and we also have a website where you can find out a lot of things about what we do. It’s trynaturaldentistry.com. You can also go to our facebook page.

This is a live call in show. I will be taking up to one call today. If you want to call right now it’s 866-KPRAISE, 866-577-2473. The phone lines are now open; I have Ernest, who’s going to take your call and we’ll patch you through.

Without further ado, I’m doing to introduce my guest for today. This guy is incredible. I’m very happy to introduce him; I’m very happy to call him my friend. He’s a very good friend of mine; even though our relationship hasn’t started, another good friend of mine introduced us to each other and we’ve just taken it off. His name is Mr. Juan Acosta. He is a medical hypnotherapist. You may not have heard of this. That’s right, a medical hypnotherapist. So Juan, welcome to the show.

Juan: Thank you, Dr. Marvin.

Dr. Marvin: Thanks for coming in. One of the issues that we have that a lot of our patients or you listeners out there may have is that you have a lot of anxiety about going to the dentist. A lot of my patients just don’t want to go to the dentist because of fear. It’s one of the reasons why dentists have such a high suicide rate, because everybody hates us. You don’t know how many times patients have come to see me and say, “I hate the dentist.” I just met them and they’re telling me how much they hate the dentist or hate me as a dentist. Can you imagine going throughout my life and people saying ‘I hate you’ the moment they know I’m a dentist? So tell me a little bit about who you are, Juan. Where did you come from? Most importantly, what can you do to help people with these anxiety issues?

Juan: Absolutely. So, as you mentioned, I am a medical hypnotist, which simply means that I use hypnosis as a tool for helping people with medical issues, such as fibromyalgia, IBS, cancer, and that kind of stuff. I work with dentists and dental practices to help their patients be more relaxed, less anxious, not fear the needle so much, if you will. If they’re grinding their teeth, for example, I can help them with that as well. It’s one of those things where I teach them to be more in touch with their mind and body connection so that they can effect it.

Dr. Marvin: The office that I have is called The Center for Natural Dentistry. One of the aspects of natural dentistry we like is that we try to use a more natural approach. This is a more natural approach, because we’re not drugging people or forcing people to have a delirious state by giving them drugs. What you’re doing is you’re actually getting to the root cause of problems without drugs. Is that right?

Juan: Yeah, absolutely. If you have to take a Xanax just to be able to show up to the dentist and be relaxed enough, then you’re putting things in your body that shouldn’t be there.

Dr. Marvin: Yeah, they also have nasty side effects too. A lot of people don’t want to take these drugs because of all the side effects. If you like a natural approach to dentistry, we even have natural approaches to get over your fear of going to the dentist. Tell me what you do. What is the procedure or what’s the process that you go through with these patients.

Juan: Hypnosis is based on the principle of something that I call the cycle of feelings, which means that the thoughts that we have inside create feelings inside of us. When we’re feeling great we take positive action and we get positive results. When we’re not feeling so great we take actions that are negative and of course we get negative results. I call it the cycle of feelings, because it’s at the feeling level that the change actually happens. If I can help you feel less anxious about going to the dentist, then you’ll take the positive action to actually go and take care of things. You’ll get positive results, as opposed to waiting and procrastinating for a year or two until the problem you had, which was small at the time, has become something large. With hypnosis we effect this cycle at the thought level. At the very base of it I help you guide your mind in to thoughts that are more pleasant. I will give you more pleasant feelings. I will give you more relaxation and control over your mind and body connections so that you can take positive action.

Dr. Marvin: Fear is dangerous. When you have these negative thoughts and fears they can actually escalate and just control all of your actions. You’re taking it from the other view, that positive thoughts will help you in controlling those actions. Believe it or not, a lot of people know that going to the dentist is a good idea. The reason is because you want to take care of problems early. You want to take care of or prevent future problems. It will save you money if you were to identify these and take care of it, but these fears are so strong that it keeps people from going to the dentist. By the time they go to the dentist, it ends up being thousands of dollars worth of work, because they put off this work so long. With you on our team, Juan, we’re able to get to the root cause of the fear and anxiety. Just avert their focus from all the possible fears that they could be having. One fear leads to another fear, which gets them paranoid, gets all this anxiety, then they end up not going to the dentist, they end up not getting the treatment, and then it’s getting into other health issues. They get these infections that get so big it will effect their overall health. Now they’re not just fearing the dentist, they’re fearing the procedures and also the ramifications of health issues. This type of treatment that you do is quite remarkable. I want to say it’s kind of like the missing link. If you are out there thinking about going to see us, or let’s say you’re a patient of ours already, which a lot of my listeners are, and you still have this anxiety or fear of going to the dentist or fear of the unknown, this is something you can help with.

Juan: Absolutely, I can.

Dr. Marvin: We have a caller. Hello, this is Dr. Marvin. You’re on Let’s Talk Dentistry. How can I help you?

Caller: I wanted to ask a question. Candida thrives on sugar and cancer thrives on sugar. I was just wondering, a lot of microbes and parasites in the body thrive off of sugar. Is it the same with dental infections and cavitations and stuff?

Dr. Marvin: Yes, it’s a good one. We could have four or five shows on sugar and dental links with sugar. I like to look at things holistically. And your name, sir, I’m sorry.

Caller: Curtis

Dr. Marvin: OK Curtis, thanks for calling. There’s a lot of things. We can look at it from different angles. One angle is the basic angle that sugar feed the bacteria that produces acids which can cause gum disease and can cause tooth decay. There’s that angle. There’s also been angles where the sugar or the refined sugars that we eat can go in to our body, go in to our bloodstream and actually cause our teeth to be more susceptible to cavities and infections. When our body combats these sugars and our cells take on sugars, it can actually release more free radicals. These free radicals are caused by inflammation. The inflammatory process can actually break down our body. When you look at it from so many angles, from effecting our immune system to effecting our defenses against tooth issues, our defenses against infections, I call these little battles in our body that our immune system is fighting. The more battles that we have, our immune system can either be very weak and be more susceptible to colds and flu and everything that’s combating us. Just normal stuff that can cause our body to overreact, or it can cause our immune system to overreact and cause our immune system to attack our cells. It’s called autoimmune disease. Sugars are dangerous, not just from the standpoint of cavities, but from the standpoint of our overall health and our immune system and our own natural defenses. It is quite dangerous. There are other avenues like mercury fillings that release mercury vapor which goes into our body, kills the bacteria that helps regulate candida, and now you’re having a systemic candida issue. That candida thrives on sugar, as you just mentioned. That kind of gets us addicted to the sugar. Great question, Curtis. There are a lot of aspects of sugar. In general sugar is not good for our body in multiple ways, including our dental health. It’s just kind of cyclical. It can cause some really dangerous stuff in our body.

Caller: OK. Chad Jolflie says high. You guys hooked me up with him because he’s one of your great successes. He’s still doing very, very well. He experienced great healing from the neck pain and everything he had. He’s helped inspire me to come in and get x-rayed. I’ll see you Tuesday and I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ll find.

Dr. Marvin: Alright, great. Thanks for the call; I look forward to seeing you. I love it! I absolutely love it when patients get results and they tell other people. This is how our world is run these days. Tell me, Juan. You know a lot of the science behind the mind and how your mind and these good feelings I’m having right now, because someone referred someone to me and because I basically allow the body to do what it’s supposed to do. I removed things or toxins from someone’s body, I gave people the information, which is knowledge, which is power, which is control that helps people. This has a very distinct mind connection. I think that’s what you’re basically talking about. Your thoughts or your mind can influence not only your health but your overall life. Is that right?

Juan: Absolutely. Our mind can really tell the difference whether we are actually having an experience or we are actually imagining something very vividly. When you get all these good feelings from somebody calling, saying, ‘hey, we loved your services; you’ve done such a great job,’ it inspires those thoughts in your mind that release the chemicals in your brain that make you feel good.

Dr. Marvin: So all this time, I didn’t really know this, but all these positive thoughts that people give me, which feeds more of my positive thoughts, has probably effected my life in multiple ways. So I’ve hypnotized myself naturally without even knowing it.

Juan: Yeah, most people have experienced hypnosis in one way or another. Hypnosis has so many definitions, but it all comes down to the fact that we can concentrate on something so much that all of the other things around don’t matter that much. For example, when you’re driving down the road and you almost miss your exit or you do miss your exit, that sort of daydream that you were in, that sort of inward direction of your thoughts is simply a state of hypnosis. We can create that very naturally and very simply, because it’s something that you already do. It’s just about understanding how you can actually effect that on purpose as opposed to just letting it happen to you, where bad thoughts come in and you can’t get rid of them. That of course gives you bad feelings, which creates bad actions, which creates negative results.

Dr. Marvin: I have very good feelings right now about what I do. That’s the reason why I have this show. I’m very inspired by the show. I was inspired by my patients. I just love helping people. I get frustrated sometimes because dentists have an opportunity to help people so often, not just from the standpoint of fixing teeth, but helping people change their lifestyle (like the story that I talked about earlier), but on the other hand, it’s like I’m here as a trouble shooter, and I also want people to listen to my suggestions, and some people have these negative things that come into their head. I get negative things that come into my head, but what do I do about those negative things? There are probably people out there that have negative thoughts in their head because we’re talking on this show about hypnosis. What people are thinking right now is, ‘I thought that hypnosis is where people hypnotize people into doing things that they don’t want to do.’ Some people may have negative thoughts about hypnosis, so tell me what the basis is behind that and tell me what hypnosis really is.

Juan: The basis of that is about belief systems, what we have been told throughout our life, what we believe from when we were kids, from what our parents say, from the experience we’ve had, sort of becomes our map of the world. For some people, you might hear the word hypnosis and you think, ‘Oh, cluck like a chicken.’ Right? Some people might think, ‘Stop smoking.’ In reality, most people don’t understand how that lack of awareness or lack of deciding to experience other things outside of their belief can hold them back. What I like to teach my clients is about being more open and understanding that the thoughts we have are simply just that. They’re thoughts. They are what creates our feelings. If we’re having feelings that we don’t like we can easily think back and say, “Why did I have that feeling? Oh, it’s because I thought about this.” What do you do? Once you build that awareness and you can consciously stop yourself at the feeling level, then you can back track, sort of reverse engineer, and go “Oh, let’s have different thoughts. Let’s have thoughts about something that is pleasant, something that we like, that we’re happy about.”

Dr. Marvin: I’m going to tell you that it makes sense. Everything Juan said makes sense, but these negative thoughts or experiences are ingrained in us. Going back to dentistry, a lot of my listeners and a lot of people have thoughts of childhood experiences going to the dentist. I get it all the time. I’m talking to a patient, and right away they say, “I had a horrible childhood. There was this one event.” We may identify those one events, but I am not the expert at fearing out this event and trying to get them to overcome it. That’s where you need professional help, in my opinion. I am not a hypnotist, but a lot of times I don’t know how I can get them to overcome their fear, because these patients that come in have made a very bold step. They’ve been very brave to make a phone call to schedule an appointment, and they were very brave to come to the appointment. They hate going to the dentist and they’re coming to the dentist. They’ve made very strong efforts to overcome their fear and experiences, but when they come I have to explain all of this stuff that they probably need to do in order to improve their health, and they have these fears and negative thoughts still in there. That’s really why I brought you in, and I’m glad that my friend brought you in, because I don’t know how to fix or help these people. Is this something that you would do, or coach our patients that are very fearful into overcoming these issues?

Juan: Absolutely. It’s something that is easy to learn, and it’s what I do. I coach people to understand that connection and to be able to control it as opposed to letting it control them.

Dr. Marvin: I’m going to refer to Juan as basically our expert in helping you overcome. I don’t want dentistry and you don’t want dentistry or the things in your mouth to effect your life negatively. One of the reasons why I brought you on to the show today and one of the reasons we have you in the office is because we want to focus on what it is that can really get down to the root cause of the problem so that you can get your health back on track. That’s the real reason why we brought Juan Acosta. Juan, I know it felt like the show was like two minutes long. We’re coming down to the end. We need like a seven hour show. I love my listeners for tuning in or listening to us on our podcast. I’m actually going to provide a special for our patients; this is what I do. If you want to come in for an exam and x-ray, if you’re a new patient and haven’t been to our office, or if you’ve been to our office, with an exam and x-ray I’m going to actually provide a free session with Juan for the first three callers. Call right now, it’s 760-536-1199. If you’re one of the first three callers and you pay for an exam and x-ray, I will pay for one session for Juan. He charges $125 for a session; this is a $125 value. If you’re one of the first three callers that schedules an exam and x-rays, we’ll go ahead and provide you with that session. How does that sound? Pretty good. Juan, thank you very much for coming in. Any final words?

Juan: Thank you, doctor, for having me. If anyone wants to find more information they can go to thoughtsintoresults.com.

Dr. Marvin: We’re going to put that on our facebook page or you can give us a call, and we’ll give you that contact information. Thank you very much, Juan, for coming. Thank you for listening. Thanks, Curtis, for calling; can’t wait to see you this week. This is Dr. Marvin with Let’s Talk Dentistry. See you same time, same place next time.
