Teeth Whitening in San Diego: ADA Creates New Teeth Whitening Standard
Teeth whitening products are now more popular than ever. From over-the-counter whiteners to bleaching services provided by a local Encinitas dentist, more and more people are using these products to help them achieve shiny white teeth. With teeth whitening’s ever-growing popularity, the American Dental Association felt the need to develop a new safety standard for these bleaching agents, to ensure the better protection of the public who use them.
In January 2016, the ADA approved ANSI/ADA Standard No. 136, a standard that defines the requirements that must be met and the test methods that must be undertaken before a chemical teeth bleaching product can be deemed fit for use. The standard was developed by various dental professionals, researchers, manufacturers, and experts in the field of dentistry. Some of these professionals came from the ADA Laboratories itself.
“The public has started using bleaching agents more than ever before, and thus standards are needed to assure the profession and the public that bleaching products are safe,” said Clifton Carey, Ph.D., a member of the ADA Standards Committee on Dental Products working group that developed the standard. “Requirements for meeting label-declared concentrations of active ingredients; assurance of enamel safety (i.e., no softening or erosion); restoration safety; soft tissue safety; toxicity; and instructions for proper use are included in this standard. These requirements are based on the best evidence available.”
Some of the requirements contained in the new standard address the issue of toxicity, proper usage, and the assurance that the products are safe for gums and enamel.
“The goal within this group is to establish safety requirements so that the public does not face risk of harm when using bleaching products,” Dr. Carey adds.
Once the Council on Scientific Affairs incorporates the new standard into the ADA’s general Seal of Approval, manufacturers of teeth whitening products will be required to confirm their product’s safety and efficacy with supporting documents before their products can receive the ADA seal.
