What a Holistic Dentist Wants You to Know About Fluoridated Water
An apple a day keeps the doctor away; fluoride keeps tooth decay at bay. Indeed, the idea that fluoride is good for oral health has been so ingrained that the fluoridation of water has been hailed as one of the top 10 public health achievements of the 20th century.
What many people don’t know, however, is that the benefits of fluoridation have been debated for at least 60 years. In the 1940s, scientists noted that people who lived in areas where water had higher fluorine levels tended to accrue fewer cavities.
In succeeding decades, however, the case for water fluoridation has been weakened after subsequent research proving that fluoride is connected to adverse health effects. A holistic dentist in Encinitas would like parents to know such inconvenient truths.
Fluoride Can Decrease IQ
Those who think water fluoridation is smart should guess again. In a meta-analysis of 27 studies, Harvard University found that 26 of them indicate that fluoride can actually lower a child’s IQ. An excerpt from the report says, “The results suggest that fluoride may be a developmental neurotoxicant that affects brain development at exposures much below those that can cause toxicity in adults.”
It Endangers Your Bones
Your bones are the framework of your body, so keeping them healthy is of utmost importance. Unfortunately, research has shown that fluoridated water can actually be detrimental to bone health. According to a 2006 study by Dr. Elise Bassin of the Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention, fluorine (the chemical element in fluoridation) is strongly linked with osteocarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. On another study by the National Academies of Sciences, people exposed to water that has a fluoride concentration of 4 mg/L or higher are more likely to develop bone fractures.
Not Good for Your Teeth
Even fluoride’s supposed benefit to teeth has been put into question. Once again, the National Academies of Sciences found that children exposed to water that has 4 mg/L or more of fluorine stand a risk of developing severe tooth enamel fluorosis, wherein the teeth become discolored and the enamel wears away.
Of course, none of this should be surprising considering that fluorine is a chemical used for insecticides. If you’re concerned about the health risks associated with fluoride, be sure to ask about it when visiting Encinitas dentists.
