Reduced Levels of Mercury in First Baby Haircuts of Autistic Children

Categories: Mercury Toxicity, ResearchAuthor:

The mothers in the autistic group had significantly higher levels of mercury exposure through Rho D immunoglobulin injections and amalgam fillings than control mothers. Within the autistic group, hair mercury levels varied significantly across mildly, moderately, and severely autistic children, with mean group levels of 0.79, 0.46, and 0.21 ppm, respectively. Hair mercury levels among controls were significantly correlated with the number of the mothers’ amalgam fillings and their fish consumption as well as exposure to mercury through childhood vaccines, correlations that were absent in the autistic group. Hair excretion patterns among autistic infants were significantly reduced relative to control. These data cast doubt on the efficacy of traditional hair analysis as a measure of total mercury exposure in a subset of the population. In light of the biological plausibility of mercury’s role in neurodevelopmental disorders, the present study provides further insight into one possible mechanism by which early mercury exposures could increase the risk of autism. Charlie Brown speaks out against dental mercury in California

Charlie Brown of Consumers for Dental Choice recently conducted an on-air debate with an ADA spokesperson who supports dental amalgam. Below is the message from Anita Vazquez Tibau, Project Director at Californians for Green Dentistry.

Charlie Brown speaks out against dental mercury in California

Dear Californians,

Our Californians for Green Dentistry project is drawing increased press attention.  On February 1, Southern California Public Radio (89.3 KPCC) conducted a debate between Charlie Brown of Consumers for Dental Choice and an ADA spokesman who supports dental mercury.  You can listen to the debate, moderated by Larry Mantle of Air Talk, by clicking here now.*

As you’ll hear, pro-mercury dentists still refuse to acknowledge that amalgam is a major source of mercury pollution in our water, air, and soil.  (Once it’s in the environment, it converts to the even more toxic methylmercury that contaminates the fish we eat – and taxpayers are footing the bill for the environmental clean-up.)  And the pro-mercury dentists still insist on implanting amalgam into children and pregnant women even though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that (1) there is no scientific evidence that amalgam is safe for these vulnerable populations and (2) the mercury released by amalgams endangers the developing neurological systems of children and fetuses.**

We encourage you to join the debate online by clicking here to post a comment on the radio program.* Let’s let the pro-mercury dentists know that we’re on to them.

Best wishes,

Anita
